Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how the TollSense mobile and Android Auto application ("the App", "we", "us") handles your information. By using the App you agree to the practices described here.

1. The short version

TollSense uses your device's location to detect upcoming toll plazas and alert you while you drive. Toll detection and distance calculations happen entirely on your device, and your precise location is never uploaded to us or to anyone else.

To keep the App reliable, we collect a small amount of anonymous usage and crash-diagnostic data through Google Firebase (see section 4). This data is aggregated, contains no name or contact details, and can be turned off in Settings. We do not sell your data and do not use advertising SDKs.

2. Information we access and collect

• Precise location (foreground & background). Used on your device to compute your distance to toll plazas and to determine when you enter or exit a tolled highway. Your precise coordinates are processed in real time on the device, are not retained beyond what is needed to generate an alert, and are never transmitted off the device.
• Anonymous analytics & diagnostics. If telemetry is enabled, the App sends Google Firebase a set of coarse, low-detail events (for example: monitoring started, a toll alert fired or was passed, an approximate distance/fare range, GPS quality). Continuous values are rounded into broad buckets before they ever leave the device, so no exact location, route, speed, or fare is sent. Firebase also automatically associates this data with an app-instance identifier and infers an approximate (city-level) location from your IP address.
• Crash and performance logs. If a crash or error occurs, Google Crashlytics receives a crash report with technical context (device model, OS version, app state breadcrumbs) to help us fix it.
• No account, no contact details. TollSense does not ask you to sign in and does not collect your name, email, contacts, or phone number. (Joining the optional launch waitlist on our website is separate — see section 13.)

3. Why we need background location

Toll alerts must work while you are driving and the App is not on screen — for example when Google Maps is in the foreground or your phone is locked. For this reason the App requests background location access and runs a foreground service while monitoring is active. A persistent notification is shown whenever monitoring is running, so you always know when location is in use.

4. Analytics and crash reporting (Google Firebase)

We use Google Firebase Analytics and Firebase Crashlytics to understand whether toll alerts are firing correctly in the real world and to diagnose crashes. This helps us improve detection accuracy without asking you to report problems manually.

• The data is anonymous and aggregated: numeric values are converted to broad ranges (buckets) on your device, and we never set a user ID.
• Your precise location is never sent to Firebase. Firebase does derive a rough, city-level location from your IP address, as it does for any app that uses it.
• Firebase is operated by Google as our data processor and is governed by Google's privacy and data-processing terms.
• You can turn all of this off at any time — see section 9.

5. How location is used and where it goes

Toll detection and distance calculations happen entirely on your device. We do not store your location on any server we control, and we never sell or share it. Toll plaza and fare data is bundled with the App; it does not include any of your personal or location information.

6. Address lookup

To display a human-readable place name (for example, the road or town you are near), the App uses the geocoding service built into your Android device. This lookup is handled by the operating system on your device; TollSense does not send your coordinates to any TollSense server or third-party service for this purpose. Because this geocoder is part of Android, its behaviour is governed by your device and operating-system provider.

7. Permissions summary

• Location — toll detection (described above).
• Notifications — to display toll alerts and the monitoring status.
• Foreground service — to keep toll monitoring running while driving.

8. Data sharing and processors

We do not sell your data and we do not share it for advertising. The only third party that receives any app data is Google Firebase (Analytics & Crashlytics), which processes the anonymous analytics and crash data described above on our behalf. We may also disclose information if required by law.

9. Your choices and data deletion

• Turn off telemetry. You can disable analytics and crash reporting at any time from the App's Settings screen. When disabled, the App stops collecting and sending this data.
• Location. You can revoke location permission in your device settings; toll alerts will stop working, but no data leaves your device.
• Deletion. The analytics data we hold is anonymous and not tied to an identifiable person. If you would like us to delete data associated with your app instance, or your waitlist email, contact us at the address in section 14 and we will action it.

10. Data retention

Your precise location is held only momentarily in memory on your device to generate an alert and is not stored afterwards. Anonymous analytics events are retained by Firebase according to Google's standard retention period (up to 14 months), after which they are automatically deleted. Crash reports are retained only as long as needed to diagnose and fix issues.

11. Security

Data sent to Firebase is transmitted over encrypted (HTTPS/TLS) connections. Because TollSense keeps your location on your device and collects no account or contact information in the App, the amount of data that could be exposed is deliberately minimal.

12. Children

TollSense is intended for drivers and is not directed at children under 13.

13. Launch waitlist (website)

If you choose to join our launch waitlist on this website, your email address is collected through a Google Form and used solely to notify you once TollSense is available on the Play Store. That form is operated by Google and subject to Google's privacy policy. We do not add you to any other list, and you can ask us to delete your address at any time at the contact email below. This is entirely optional and separate from the App.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the App evolves. Material changes will be reflected by the "Last updated" date above.
